The economics of the guest does not end when the room is booked.

Hotels fight the 15, 18 or 20 per cent they can see on a P&L. The larger loss happens after the booking, outside the property, and never appears in any report.

The new frontier of the conversational website is not making the guest talk more. It is understanding better, by asking less.

A full house can hide weak economics. Selling more rooms does not automatically produce more profit — not when ADR falls, cost per occupied room rises, and total guest spend is never measured.

The room is the smallest part of what a traveller spends. The strategic question is not how much the room produced, but how much of the guest's total spending the property actually captured.
